Pros and Cons
Being an online mattress reviewer, one of the most commonly asked questions I get is, "which one is the best?" There are a lot of ways to answer that question, but when it comes to affordability, the Allswell is the clear winner.
Online hybrid beds are becoming more and more expensive. At CNET, it's not unusual for us to review a brand-new hybrid bed that's priced well over $1,000. That's why it's so refreshing to finally review a cheaper hybrid option that's also surprisingly good quality. In this review, I'll cover the ins and outs of the Allswell mattress and go over who exactly it's best for.
First impressions of the Allswell
There are many online beds available at local retailers. Walmart owns the Allswell brand, so you can order it online or pick it up at Walmart -- how convenient. In either case, it will be packaged the same way: wrapped in plastic inside a large cardboard box. To set it up at home, all you have to do is take it out of the box and plastic wrap, and the bed will start to inflate before your eyes.
Once it's unboxed, it might look a little sad or misshapen. This is a normal part of the process. Most beds that are compressed down to fit in a box just need some time to sit out on your foundation to off-gas and properly expand -- that was the case for our Allswell. When I tested the bed out, it felt like an accommodating hybrid bed that could work well for most guest rooms. It looks and feels surprisingly premium considering how cheap it is.
The Allswell mattress firmness and feel

Watch me review the Allswell mattress.
The Allswell mattress has a generally accommodating, neutral hybrid feel. It does have some memory foam near the top for comfort, but it just adds a bit of pressure relief to the mattress while the coils and more neutral comfort elements balance out the bed with a good amount of responsiveness.
If you're not sure what type of feel you want your next mattress to have, getting something with this supportive, neutral feel is often a safe choice. More specific styles of mattresses have memory foam or latex foam feels, which can put certain sleepers off. If you just want a comfy hybrid mattress for your guest room or your main bedroom, the Allswell has you covered.
How firm is the Allswell mattress?
The Allswell is currently only available in one firmness level, and I'd say it's around a medium -- maybe between that and a medium-firm. This firmness makes the bed a great option for all sleeper types, but it's especially nice for back, stomach and combination sleepers who want more support rather than pressure relief.
Firmness is a subjective thing from person to person, but we have a machine at CNET that can pinpoint the objective firmness of a bed. It's called the Mattress Smasher 9000, and it gave this mattress a firmness rating of 6.3 out of 10. That's very much in line with our subjective thoughts on the bed's firmness -- sometimes, it's nice to be proven right by a giant bed robot.
The Allswell mattress construction
This is a hybrid bed with a relatively simple construction. It's 10 inches thick and comprised of the following layers:
1. On the bottom, you've got a thin layer of support foam that acts as a base for the bed's main support system of coils. Those coils are extra-reinforced along the edges to provide a sturdy perimeter.
2. Then, you've got a responsive transition layer to act as a buffer between the support and comfort layers of the bed.
3. Above that, you've got the bed's main comfort layer. In this case, it's around gel-infused memory foam.
4. Rounding everything out is a nice quilted cover. It's got some added comfort elements mixed in to provide the bed with some additional cushion.
The Allswell mattress performance
Motion isolation
This mattress performs fine in terms of isolating cross-mattress movement. For this category, dense memory foam options typically have the best motion-deadening capabilities. This bed has some memory foam on top for comfort, which helps to mitigate some motion transferring from side to side. If you sleep with a partner who's easily woken up, I doubt your nightly motions will jostle them awake on the Allswell.
Edge-to-edge support
I found that the Allswell has some pretty sturdy edges. The bed has a reinforced perimeter, so when you get close to its edges, there's no apparent roll-off sensation. Either side of this mattress is designed to withstand a lot of weight, which is nice for those of us who like to sleep closer to the edges of a bed at night -- good news for bed hogs.
Temperature
I'd classify the Allswell as a temperature-neutral sleeping option. Though it's advertised as having some potential "cooling features," it's not comparable with the active-cooling beds found online these days. That said, I don't expect the Allswell mattress to warm up excessively for most couples. If you both sleep on the warmer side and are looking for a bed to help cool you down at night, check out our Best Cooling Mattress for Hot Sleepers list.
Durability
Since this is a premium hybrid bed with reinforced edges, I'd say this bed is durable enough to last most couples for several years to come. In the long run, hybrid mattresses typically last a bit longer than all-foam beds just because support foams can degrade slightly faster than coils, especially underneath much heavier people. This bed's hybrid design should be durable enough to last all body types for the next seven to 10 years -- and that's at the bare minimum.
Who is the Allswell mattress best for?
Though the bed's design, feel and firmness are versatile enough to work for just about anyone, it still might be best for a select group of sleepers. Here's who we think the Allswell is perfect for.
Sleeping position
Since the bed is slightly firmer than a true medium, we see it mainly working best for people who like to sleep on their back or stomach. If you're a combination sleeper, like myself, who rotates between all sleeping positions throughout the course of a night, this mattress should also accommodate that preference. When it comes to side sleepers who are searching for a more pressure-relieving style of bed, this isn't the best choice for that. There are a couple of softer Allswell beds to consider, and we've even done a list of the Best Mattress for Side Sleepers to help narrow down your search in this regard.
Body type
As mentioned, the construction of this bed makes it supportive enough to handle all body types, including heavier people. If you're more petite or average-sized, you could also get by on the Allswell mattress, but the level of support could also be overkill for you. In that case, you could get by on an all-foam bed, but it might not be as affordable.
Allswell mattress pricing
Size | Measurements (inches) | Price |
---|---|---|
Twin | 38x75 | $217 |
Twin XL | 38x80 | $217 |
Full | 54x74 | $257 |
Queen | 60x80 | $317 |
King | 76x80 | $337 |
Cal king | 72x84 | $357 |
Speaking of affordability, you're not reading this pricing wrong. The Allswell mattress really is that cheap, which is awesome when you consider how expensive other online hybrid beds are nowadays -- it's great for those of us on a tight budget.
Trial, shipping and warranty
Allswell backs its beds with the standard policy set offered with many other Walmart products. Its beds ship to you in a box for free, and once it's in your possession, you get a 90-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that time frame, you can return it for free. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you're backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Just be sure to use the right foundation for the bed. Otherwise, you could void your bed's warranty.
How does the Allswell compare to other mattresses?
The Allswell vs. Allswell Luxe
While the flagship Allswell is slightly firmer, the Allswell Luxe sits at a flat medium on our scale, making it the more suitable option for all sleep styles, including side sleepers. The Allswell Luxe is more expensive than the Allswell, but not by much, making it another affordable option from the brand. Both options share a similar type of neutral hybrid feel that will accommodate most people who are in the market for a simple, comfy bed.
The Allswell vs. Brooklyn Bedding Signature
These are two of the most popular neutral hybrid beds found online, but what are the major reasons to go with one over the other? While the Allswell is of decent quality, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature is the more notable contender when it comes down to craftsmanship. It's hand-made right here in the United States. And while both have a neutral hybrid feel, you get three different firmness choices with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, as opposed to the Allswell, which only has one. But if you're looking for a more affordable mattress, the Allswell takes the cake.
The final verdict
We still can't believe how downright affordable this bed is, especially when you consider its quality and how accommodating it is. For these reasons, I could see it being a great option for a guest room or Airbnb. If you're looking for a cheap bed with a neutral firmness and feel that's able to support all body types, the Allswell might be your next bed.
You might like the Allswell mattress if:
- You want a supportive hybrid mattress
- You want a neutral hybrid feel
- You like a slightly firmer style of mattress
- You want a super affordable bed
You might not like the Allswell mattress if:
- You're looking for an all-foam mattress
- You prefer the feel of a neutral or latex foam mattress
- You want more of a pressure-relieving mattress
- You've got the budget to spend for a premium bed
Other mattresses from Allswell
There are some other options to choose from within the Allswell lineup. You can check out the brand's upgraded hybrid beds from the Allswell, the Allswell Luxe and Allswell Supreme. These are thicker mattresses that have more comfort elements on top to give them softer profiles and accommodate all sleeper types, not just back and stomach sleepers.
Speaking of back and stomach sleepers, Allswell also offers the Allswell Brick. By the name, you can probably tell that this is a much firmer style of hybrid bed. It's around a proper medium-firm and able to provide plenty of support for your back if you prefer something a bit firmer than your average mattress.
Allswell mattress FAQs
Can you flip an Allswell mattress?
Who makes the Allswell mattress?
As I mentioned, the brand Allswell is owned by Walmart. You can order this bed on Walmart’s website or pick it up in-store. This makes it a convenient option for those looking for a new, accommodating bed in a pinch.
How long do Allswell mattresses last?
Being a supportive hybrid bed, the Allswell should last you for at least the next seven to 10 years, if not much longer. Hybrid beds are often thought to last longer than all-foam beds since steel coils last longer. For that reason alone, this bed should last you for many years to come, regardless of body type.
