Jamaica’s battle with good and evil
Someone once said that God allows evil to accomplish good. Hence, He allowed His only son to be crucified in order to save mankind — sounds logical.
But why is it that in the eastern side of the island we are having floods and massive boulders being dislodged and causing the death of a person when all we have are poor farmers trying to eke out a living, while in Western Kingston, terrorism reigns, yet hardly a drop of rain? Maybe that is because God allows some evil to accomplish good while others he chooses to ignore.
Jamaicans have to decide if we need dons to maintain law and order or can rely on the State, primarily led by the police, to attempt to do so. When Christopher “Dudus” Coke ruled Tivoli Gardens, there was a semblance of crude justice interspersed with criminality and the State backed off and allowed him to dispense it. When alleged Klansman gang leader Tesha Miller ruled Spanish Town and its environs, a similar thing happened. Nowadays, without Miller, there is chaos.
When the State creates a vacuum of enforcing law and order then criminals step in. Nature abhors a vacuum. We listened to a heart-rending interview with a young Western Kingston mother attempting to understand why the State cannot protect her and her family. Where is Desmond McKenzie, her Member of Parliament? Where is her prime minister, Andrew Holness? Both are busy revving up the prosperity engine and attempting to win the local government elections.
But, how many of us are going to survive to enjoy the coming prosperity? Dr Herbert Gayle earlier this year said, while conducting research on gangs in Britain, the police told him that one Jamaican officer is assigned as many cases to investigate as an entire police borough does in Britain. We have 2.7 million people, Britain 55 million. The cold, hard fact is that we are mainly left on our own, we have to fend for ourselves. Which one of us has a child who, if killed on a bus while refusing to hand over a phone, could offer a million-dollar reward and have the entire private sector back us?
Finally, if Portia Simpson Miller continues this type of behaviour her party cannot lose the local government election or next general election. That is exactly what Donald Trump did.
